THE SPORTZOLOGIST EXPERIENCE

About

Australian sport has more stories than anybody could reasonably keep track of. We decided to try anyway.

What is The Sportzologist Experience?

The Sportzologist Experience is an Australian sports rabbit hole.

You might arrive looking for something about rugby league and, twenty minutes later, find yourself reading about a forgotten country football match, an extraordinary cricket performance, a piece of sporting history or something that happened decades before you were born.

That's rather the point.

Sport happening now

Sport doesn't politely wait for history to catch up with it.

The Experience follows what's happening now through tipping, commentary, reactions and the Sportz Editor — selections, signings, controversies, collapses and the occasional decision that requires everybody to stop for a moment and ask what the hell just happened.

Sport that happened before

Then there are the stories that have been sitting around for years, quietly waiting for somebody to go looking for them.

Sporting History, On This Day, Did You Know and the various Files explore great performances, strange records, forgotten players, remarkable matches and moments that deserve another look.

Some stories are famous. Some have almost disappeared. We like both kinds.

And then there's the grassroots

Not every great sporting story happened in front of 80,000 people or a television audience.

Country grounds, suburban competitions, local clubs and community sport have produced more than their share of extraordinary performances, ridiculous scorelines, unlikely heroes and stories that deserve to survive.

The grassroots sections are where we go looking for them.

There are also several departments

This got bigger than expected. Eventually we had to employ staff. Nobody is entirely sure who authorised it.

The Columnist has opinions. The Sportz Editor has a desk. The Tipster studies the form. The Therapist deals with supporters who have made the mistake of becoming emotionally invested in a sporting team. The Clerk accepts formal grievances against sport itself.

There is also an Emotional Recovery Centre.

Unfortunately, demand has been strong.

You choose where to go

The Experience is designed around the sports, clubs and subjects that interest you.

Follow rugby league. Follow cricket. Follow rugby union. Follow the history. Follow your club. Ignore the things that don't interest you and disappear into the things that do.

We don't need to guess what you like. You can tell us.

The archive is never really finished

Sporting history has an annoying habit of producing another newspaper clipping, another statistic, another photograph, another eyewitness and another bloke who says, "Actually, I was there."

That's why many parts of The Sportzologist Experience are designed as living pages. When worthwhile new information turns up, stories can be corrected, expanded and revisited rather than being treated as finished forever.

Become a Supporter

Sporting stories don't research themselves. We checked. Neither do the staff, although several have submitted invoices.

Becoming a Supporter helps fund the research, writing and illustrations behind The Sportzologist Experience, with access to selected additional stories and archive content.

Planned membership: $6 AUD per month.

About the price of a cup of coffee each month. The coffee wears off. Our questionable sporting opinions are considerably more persistent.

Supporter membership is coming at launch. We're putting the final selection of benefits together; payments aren't open yet.

Free entry will remain available. Becoming a Supporter is optional.

Welcome to the rabbit hole

The idea is simple: come in for one thing and find another three things you didn't know you wanted to read.

Wander around. Click things. Get distracted. That's what it's here for.
